Historically, Asia has been the dominant contributor, averaging a 65% share of the U.S. goods deficit from 1990 to 2025. China overtook the rest of Asia in 2006, reaching 48% of the deficit by 2018, but its share fell sharply after the U.S.–China trade war, reaching 25% by 2024, while the rest of Asia climbed to 38%.
