U.S. Data Processing Unit Imports Jump to $14.8 Billion in June 2025 Amid AI Boom

U.S. imports of data processing units jumped to $14.8 billion in June 2025, pushing the 12-month total to $110 billion. This represents a 121% increase from June 2024 and a 364% surge compared with June 2023.

The dramatic rise highlights the central role of advanced chips in powering artificial intelligence systems, data centers, and high-performance computing. As U.S. firms race to secure cutting-edge hardware to train and deploy AI models, demand for imported semiconductors has accelerated at an unprecedented pace.

Semiconductors have now become one of the largest categories of U.S. high-tech imports, underscoring the country’s growing reliance on foreign suppliers—particularly in Asia—for the most advanced processors. This surge reflects both the opportunities and vulnerabilities of America’s AI-driven transformation.
